LATEST NEWS FROM BRUCE
This last year has brought some interesting and challenging projects to the table. Becoming known in the cable industry as the ”go-to guy” for producers looking for music relating to dangerous jobs and circumstances, I was signed on to score two new series, both of which earned high praise and top ratings. Ax Men for HISTORY CHANNEL deals with the precarious work of the lumberjacks in the Pacific Northwest, as they fight bad weather and equipment failures, risking life and limb to bring in the timber needed for our nation’s construction industry. My music weaves thematic elements for each of four crews, depicting their unique character and spirit. The Alaska Experiment for DISCOVERY CHANNEL documents the struggles of four teams of volunteers as they endure three months in Alaska's remotest areas equipped with only the most basic supplies. My score combines dramatic orchestral cues with driving percussion to underscore the challenges and ordeals faced by these ordinary citizens, as they grapple with the toughest conditions Mother Nature can muster.
While working on scoring the fourth season of the three-time Emmy-nominated series, Deadliest Catch for DISCOVERY CHANNEL, I was notified I would be receiving a second consecutive award from BMI for my music in this top-rated show. I then dove into scoring the second season of Ice Road Truckers for HISTORY, which also broke ratings records for the network. This year the truckers are on a race to see who can haul the most freight over a highway made entirely of ice onto the Arctic Ocean--delivering vital materials to oil exploration sites and earn the most dollars before the ice melts. The music features dramatic heroic themes, along with dark, atmospheric underscore.
In addition to writing music for Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers, last year I scored a show for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL as part of their Undercover History series. The Real Roswell seeks to come up with the definitive answer as to whether an alien spaceship did indeed crash in Roswell, N.M. in the 1940’s. I wrote a lot of fun, campy “alien” themes. I also completed music for the second season of another series for DISCOVERY dealing with career criminals, Fugitive Strike Force, which is now airing on DISCOVERY’s MILITARY CHANNEL.
Many independent producers are increasingly appreciating the benefits of having a one-stop shop where they can get original music for their project, integrated with complete sound design, along with a 5.1 mix - all in one location. A recent show for NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC CHANNEL, Mega-Structures--Indy Motor Speedway, had me doing just that. The music featured driving rock guitar, punctuated by stingers, swooshes and hits - all designed to heighten the anticipation as the action moved toward the big race day. I also composed all the music and did the sound design for Viking Maid, a documentary feature dealing with the controversy surrounding wild vs. farmed Alaskan salmon. Having the score seamlessly merged with the sound design proved to be vital when dealing with the sizable obstacle of a production soundtrack permeated with the noise of boat engines, hydraulic net haulers and flopping salmon. A fun project I also scored and mixed was Love Her Madly, a DVD released by Image Entertainment, for which I collaborated with Ray Manzarek of the musical group, “The Doors”. Ray and I teamed up to create a soundtrack CD for Love Her Madly, which was released on the Oglio label.
Recent audio work has brought in producers seeking an affordable post studio for their HD projects. For The Startup, an indie feature to be released by Maya Entertainment, I incorporated my own sound effects and Foley with those from libraries and mixed it for Dolby surround to create the unique sound for this raucous comedy.
Other notable projects have included audio post for several feature length documentaries: Two films about the war in Iraq musician Michael Franti’s critically acclaimed and award winning intimate telling, I Know I’m Not Alone, and War on Their Minds, a show about children’s opinions on the war for SHOWTIME; Christa McAuliffe: Reach for the Stars for CNN; and Maybe Baby, a heartfelt story chronicling the emotional and physiological journeys of four middle-aged women as they pursue pregnancy.
Some other shows and networks that my music has been heard on lately are FX’s, The Shield, Lobster Wars, and America’s Port for DISCOVERY CHANNEL, as well as LIFETIME NETWORK and TruTV.

Thanks,
Bruce
